TENNIS CLUB 1973-1992
by Marie Cottrell
Members originally played at King's Buildings then moved to East Suffolk Road. In 1973 they returned to King';s Buildings
splendid new all-weather courts.
There was an annual tournament for a trophy given by Mrs Ashworth and a rhino-horn cup for the runners-up.
The rhino cup was accidentally broken in 1977. With the insurance money it was decided to replace it with a silver quaich.
Players enjoyed several happy years at K.B. but gradually members dropped. Some senior members resigned for health reasons and no young people joined. In 1978
twelve members were playing tennis indoors at the Pleasance. Some continued until 1992 when the Sports Hall was required full-time for the students.
As there were no more tournaments the trophies were given to Dr. Martin Lowe, then Secretary of the University, for safe-keeping.
